Home Remedies for Cold Sores

Also known as fever blisters, cold sores are tiny fluid filled blisters found around the lips.  After a period of time the blister breaks, producing fluid and forms a crust.  Common symptoms are itching and burning but fever, sore throat and swollen lymph nodes may also occur.

Cold Sores are caused by a strain of herpes simplex virus passed by mouth to mouth contact.  There is no cure once it is in your body.

Cold Sores usually last 1-2 weeks.  Try these home remedies to help speed up the healing process.

  • Ice and Cold Water - Ice or a cold compress can help ease the burning sensation.
  • Lemon Balm - Known to have antiviral properties.  It can lessen the duration and intensity of Cold Sores.  Apply a thick layer of lemon balm cream 4 times a day.
  • Licorice -  Also known to have antiviral properties and also anti-inflammatory properties, mix a tablespoon of licorice root powder or extract with 2 teaspoons of petroleum jelly and apply to the cold sore.  Leave on overnight.
