Home Remedies for the Hiccups

Hiccups are involuntary contractions of the diaphragm followed by a quick closing of the vocal cords.  They will usually stop on their own, but here are a few home remedies to try and get rid of them faster. 

Peanut Butter - Try feeding your child a teaspoon of peanut butter.  Swallowing the sticky substance can help disrupt the hiccup cycle.

Sugar - May stimulate the vagus nerve which carries signals to the brain and can distract the body from hiccuping. 

Water - Swallowing water may interrupt the hiccup cycle as well. 

Hold your breath - Increasing carbon dioxide levels may get the body to change focus to exhaling the extra carbon dioxide.
