Homemade Remedies for Lice

As the kids go back to school so does lice.  Here are some home remedies that can help protect your kids and help remove these pests.

Olive Oil - One theory of eliminating lice is that you need to suffocate them.  Pour olive oil over the hair until it is saturated and then use a lice comb to remove the bugs and their eggs.  Then wash hair with your regular shampoo and repeat this process everyday for a week.  Continue combing out the hair with the lice comb everyday for the next two weeks.

Tea Tree Oil - Add 10 drops of tea tree oil to olive oil and leave in the hair for 3 hours.  Then use a lice comb soaked in white vinegar which will loosen the lice and eggs from the hair.  Wash out this solution with regular shampoo.  Repeat this process until you no longer see any bugs or eggs.

Garlic - Add 10 cloves of garlic to lime juice and grinding them into a paste and apply the mixture to the scalp. Let it stay on for 30 minutes and wash with warm water.

Mayonnaise -  Apply mayonnaise thoroughly onto the scalp and leave it on for the night using a shower cap.  Shampoo and rinse the next morning and comb out the dead bugs and their nits.

Coconut Oil - Apply it to the scalp leaving it in for two hours.  Use a nit comb to remove the dead lice and their eggs. Shampoo and rinse the hair with a conditioner and apply the coconut oil again once the hair is dry. Leave it on with a shower cap overnight. Use the nit comb again, rinse and dry, and repeat this treatment twice a week.

Eucalyptus Oil - Mix 20 drops of eucalyptus oil with olive oil and apply it on the scalp.  Leave it on overnight with a shower cap and comb in the morning to remove the dead lice.

Salt & Vinegar - Salt is an antiseptic and the vinegar prevents nits from latching on to the hair.  Use a spray bottle and spray on the hair generously. Follow up with a salt & vinegar rinse.
