Homemade Teething Remedies

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics most babies start teething between 4-7 months of age.  Teething babies may drool, cry and fuss, have a low grade fever or bite and chew whatever they can.

To help baby and try and soothe their gums try the following home remedies:

  • A Cold Washcloth - Soak the washcloth in cold water and give it to your baby to chew on.  The cold and pressure from chewing will help reduce the swelling and sooth the baby's gums.
  • Carrots - If your baby has started eating solid foods, try giving him/her full sized cold refrigerated carrots to chew on while you hold one end.  Make sure no pieces come off into baby's mouth so he/she does not choke.
  • Chilled Soft Foods - Another food to try if your baby has started solid foods is refrigerated applesauce or yogurt.  This has the extra benefit of feeding the baby too.
  • Gum Massage - Gently rub baby's gums with your freshly washed fingers.  The pressure from your fingers can provide comfort.
Remedies to Avoid
  • Alcohol - Older generations would rub branding or whiskey on the baby's gums.  The U.S. National Institute of Health warns parents against this as dangerous for the baby.
  • Ice - Never give baby anything frozen to chew on.  They can become too hard and damage baby's gums.
